LAA Condemns Offensive Rhetoric Targeting Puerto Rico and Latino Community

The Latin American Association (LAA) condemns the derogatory and harmful remarks made about Puerto Rico and the Latino community during former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The comments delivered by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe are not only deeply offensive but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes that foster division and intolerance. Referring to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” and making crude assertions about Latino immigrants are unacceptable actions that demean the rich culture and contributions of the Puerto Rican and Latino communities.

“Such rhetoric has no place in our society,” said Santiago Marquez, CEO of the Latin American Association. The Latino community, including the significant Puerto Rican population, plays an integral role in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of the United States. Inflammatory statements harm individuals and weaken the cohesive spirit that binds us as a nation. The LAA serves and supports the Latino and Puerto Rican community throughout Georgia and employs a number of staff that are Puerto Rican.
