LAA joins other organizations to celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month
June is Immigrant Heritage Month

WHAT/WHO:
The Latin American Association, along with “I Am An Immigrant,” Lambda Theta Phi and Asian Americans Advancing Justice, is hosting a community celebration and photo shoot to celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month. The event will feature cultural foods and music to celebrate Atlanta’s vibrant immigrant community and their many contributions to the state of Georgia. Community members are also invited to participate in a photo shoot to show solidarity with immigrants and to share positive stories of immigration in America. The event is free and open to the public.

The work of the high school students who participated in the “Portraying the Undocumented Experience” art contest, which visually illustrates the struggles of Georgia’s undocumented population, will also be featured.

“During Immigrant Heritage Month and every month, the Latin American Association celebrates the positive contributions of the nation’s immigrants,” says David Schaefer, the LAA’s director of advocacy. “This event will allow us to come together to celebrate the immigrant experience and challenge negative stereotypes about immigrants.”

WHEN:
Thursday, June 22, 6 – 8 p.m.

WHERE:
Latin American Association, 2750 Buford Highway, NE, Atlanta, GA 30324

ABOUT IMMIGRANT HERITAGE MONTH:
Immigrant Heritage Month is a month-long celebration highlighting the contributions that immigrants have made and continue to make to our nation. New to Immigrant Heritage Month this year is the “I Stand with Immigrants” campaign, an initiative that provides avenues for allies to stand in solidarity with their immigrant employees, colleagues, constituents, neighbors and friends. “I Stand with Immigrants” asks Americans to take meaningful action in support of immigrants, to share stories of the crucial ways that diverse communities enrich our society and to join a growing coalition across the country to proclaim proudly that they stand with immigrants.
