Starting on October 20, 2025, anyone who applies for naturalization will be required to study an updated and longer list of questions for the civics test.
Generally speaking, in order to naturalize, an applicant must demonstrate his/her capacity to speak, read, and write basic English, as well as demonstrate knowledge regarding basic government, history, and geography of the United States, by taking the civics exam as well as reviewing the entirety of their application for naturalization. The exam also requires that the applicant read aloud 1 of 3 sentences correctly, as well as write correctly 1 of 3 sentences.
Those individuals whose applications for Naturalization are received ON OR AFTER Oct. 20, 2025, will take the modified 2025 naturalization civics test.
The 2025 Civics test consists of 20 questions (picked randomly from a list of 128 questions) regarding basic government, history, and geography of the United States. All applicants must answer 12 questions correctly to pass. But, if 9 are answered incorrectly, the applicant fails and will have one more opportunity to re-take the exam on a date specified by USCIS. PLEASE NOTE: The wording of several questions and their respective responses have changed, and 28 extra questions for applicants to study have been added.
