Declaración sobre el fallecimiento del congresista John Lewis

La Asociación Latinoamericana (LAA) lamenta profundamente el fallecimiento del congresista John Lewis, luego de su valiente y larga batalla contra el cáncer. La LAA ofrece sus más sinceras condolencias a la familia del congresista.

El congresista Lewis fue hijo de un agricultor. Pasó la mayor parte de su vida adulta luchando contra la injusticia racial y socioeconómica que presenció y de la que estuvo rodeado de toda su vida. Luchó por esta causa hasta el último momento de su vida, y hoy es un ejemplo a seguir sobre la justicia social.

La LAA se compromete a continuar la lucha del congresista Lewis y su ejemplo, y le pedimos a todos los georgianos de todos los orígenes que nos apoyen para continuar su legado.


Declaración oficial de la LAA sobre la decisión de DACA de la Corte Suprema

El 18 de junio del 2020, después de años de litigación, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos detuvo los esfuerzos de la administración de Trump para poner fin a la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA). Esta administración ha intentado ponerle fin al programa DACA desde el 2017. Con la decisión de la semana pasada, DACA debe ser restituido a cómo era cuando fue creado el 15 de junio de 2012.

Esta decisión es una victoria para nuestras comunidades inmigrantes, así como para nuestro país. Los beneficiarios de DACA aquí en Georgia y en todo el país ahora pueden sentirse aliviados y seguir con sus vidas sin temor a ser deportados.

La Asociación Latinoamericana se une a la celebración de esta victoria junto con los 21.000 beneficiarios de DACA en Georgia y sus familias. Esta decisión de la Corte Suprema, sin embargo, es una victoria temporal. Solicitamos al Congreso que apruebe una solución permanente que le permita a los beneficiarios de DACA tener un camino a la ciudadanía, y les permita finalmente hacer de los Estados Unidos su hogar permanentemente.


Declaración oficial de la LAA en apoyo a la legislación sobre delitos de odio

La muerte de Ahmaud Arbery mientras corría a plena luz del día y la detención de dos hombres por este crimen tan horrible dos meses después, han dejado muy claro que Georgia necesita legislación contra los delitos motivados por el odio.

Georgia es uno de sólo cuatro estados que no tienen leyes contra los delitos motivados por el odio, según información de NAACP. Necesitamos que esta legislación pase urgentemente para asegurarnos que nuestro estado sea un lugar donde no se tolera el odio y se valora la diversidad en todas sus formas. 

Una vez la Asamblea General de Georgia regrese a sus sesiones plenarias el 15 de junio, solicitamos a los senadores que aprueben un proyecto de ley contra los delitos motivados por el odio. Esta ley le brindaría a Georgia un mecanismo para definir, documentar y procesar crímenes motivados por el odio.

anuncia su nuevo director ejecutivo

La junta directiva nombra a Santiago Márquez para dirigir la organización sin fines de lucro más grande de Georgia al servicio de la comunidad latina

Atlanta (5 de junio de 2020) – La Asociación Latinoamericana (LAA), la organización sin fines de lucro más grande de Georgia al servicio de la comunidad latina, anuncia el nombramiento de Santiago Márquez como su nuevo director ejecutivo.

Márquez, quien es actualmente el presidente y director general de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Georgia (GHCC), reemplazará a Aníbal Torres luego de anunciar su jubilación. Márquez asumirá el cargo el día 6 de julio.

“Estamos muy emocionados de darle la bienvenida a la Asociación Latinoamericana a nuestro nuevo director ejecutivo, Santiago Márquez”, dijo Susana Chávez, presidenta de la junta directiva de la LAA. “Santiago comenzó sirviendo a la LAA hace 20 años y estamos muy complacidos de verlo regresar a su casa”.

«Creemos que el liderazgo de Santiago ayudará a la organización y a la comunidad a superar los desafíos actuales del COVID-19 y las tensiones culturales del momento. Santiago tiene un gran reto por delante, ya que las necesidades en la comunidad latina son más grandes que nunca. Confiamos en su capacidad para dirigir a la LAA con éxito y abrir nuevas oportunidades para los latinos en Georgia», añadió Chávez.

Márquez, quien nació en Cuba y ha vivido en los Estados Unidos desde 1971, cuenta con una amplia experiencia de más de 20 años en entidades sin fines de lucro a nivel local y nacional. Años atrás, él se desempeñó como director del departamento de empleo y vivienda de la LAA, iniciando el primer programa de vivienda dirigido a la comunidad latina en Georgia. Desde el 2008, Márquez comenzó a trabajar con la GHCC y fue nombrado presidente en el 2017.

«Es un gran honor para mí regresar a la organización donde comencé mi carrera», dijo Márquez. «La LAA siempre ha estado muy cerca de mi corazón. Estoy muy emocionado de asumir este inmenso e histórico desafío en una época en la que nuestra comunidad necesita un fuerte liderazgo».

Durante los últimos cinco años, Torres ha alcanzado grandes logros para la LAA.

“La junta directiva está muy agradecida con Aníbal por sus contribuciones a la LAA”, dijo Chávez. “Aníbal ha estado vinculado con la LAA por más de 10 años, como miembro de la junta directiva, como presidente y como director ejecutivo desde el 2015, contribuyendo al progreso de la comunidad latina en Georgia”.

“Me siento muy orgulloso de haber servido a la comunidad conjuntamente con el personal de la LAA. Como la LAA es muy importante para mí, hoy completo esta etapa de mi carrera profesional con sentimientos encontrados. Me complace mucho hacerle la entrega a Santiago, a quien conozco desde hace muchos años. Yo he visto el gran trabajo que hace en la comunidad”, dijo Torres.

SOLIDARIDAD CON LA COMUNIDAD AFROAMERICANA

Las muertes sin sentido de George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery y otros miembros de la comunidad afroamericana nos recuerdan que el racismo es una realidad de todos los días. Incluso en medio de la pandemia del COVID-19, y en un momento en el que deberíamos estar unidos para luchar contra este virus y mostrar compasión por nuestros vecinos, es trágico que nuestros compatriotas afroamericanos tengan que continuar viviendo estos acontecimientos tan terribles. A menos que cada uno de nosotros tome acción para desarraigar el racismo, esta situación seguirá cobrando vidas afroamericanas.

Por tanto, la Asociación Latinoamericana se solidariza con las comunidades afroamericanas en todo el país y defiende enfáticamente el derecho de todos los estadounidenses de protestar pacíficamente para lograr justicia y una democracia más plena. Adicionalmente, urgimos a los líderes cívicos, del sector sin fines de lucro y líderes religiosos, así como a los funcionarios oficiales y electos, a responder urgentemente a este llamado de angustia a nivel nacional que ha llegado a los oídos de todos los estadounidenses.

Entendemos que el bienestar de la comunidad es el resultado del diálogo, de la bondad y de la noción colectiva de que el dolor del individuo es el dolor de la comunidad. Creemos que el vínculo entre comunidades es la mejor arma contra el odio y la violencia motivada por juicios raciales. Estamos decididos a construir el sueño del doctor Martin Luther King y entregar amor a toda la humanidad.
