Internship Program Thank you for your interest in joining the LAA team as an intern! The LAA offers a variety of internship opportunities that provide students valuable, hands-on experience in a Spanish-speaking environment. Internships are available year round, depending on the need of each department. The LAA serves the metro-Atlanta Latino community in a variety of ways, including English and Spanish classes, community outreach events, social services, translation services, employment assistance, and youth programs, to name a few. All internships are unpaid, but college credit can be arranged. Application Deadlines Applications for all of our internship positions will be accepted on a rolling basis. Resource Development Internships Communications & Public Relations Internship The Latin American Association offers internship opportunities for college students interested in developing public relations skills. Interns gain experience in media relations, writing, editing, web site development, event planning and marketing. Successful candidates will have: • Strong writing and organizational skills • High attention to detail • Creativity • Ability to meet deadlines and produce results • Some level of English/Spanish skills • Ability to work at least 20 hours per week Preferred qualities include: • Bilingual English/Spanish skills • Flexible schedule • Experience in PR positions Back to top Special Events Internship Special Events interns will assist with event logistics for whichever LAA events are coming up, depending on what time of the year you are interested in interning with us. Our major events include Compañeros Awards Luncheon (spring), Latin Fever (fall), Copa Latina soccer tournament (mid-summer), and open houses throughout the year. Interns will gain experience in event planning, post-event wrap up, fundraising, donor relations, fundraising planning and implementation, and database management. Success candidates will: • Be very outgoing, with the ability to make cold phone calls • Have significant knowledge of Excel • Strong organizational skills • High attention to detail • Ability to meet deadlines • Some level of English/Spanish skills • Ability to work at least 20 hours per week Preferred qualities in an intern include: • Bilingual English/Spanish skills • Experience with event planning and/or fundraising • Flexible schedule Back to top Volunteer Coordination Internship This position is great for college students interested in learning about volunteer coordination, outreach and event planning. Interns will gain experience in volunteer program development, coordinating volunteer efforts, maintaining and updating volunteer records, volunteer surveys and volunteer appreciation. Interns will also gain experience working with community partners, including individuals, corporations, universities, other non-profit organizations and schools. Successful candidates will have: • A positive attitude • Good people skills • Organizational skills • High attention to detail • Creativity • Ability to meet deadlines • Some level of Spanish proficiency Preferred qualities: • Bilingual English/Spanish skills • A flexible schedule • Experience coordinating volunteer programs and/or events • Ability to work at least 15-20 hours per week, if not more Back to top Employment Services Internship Employment Services Internship Employment Services interns are needed to directly work with the Latino community to advance career building initiatives. Duties may include assisting with facilitating entry-level job seeker workshops in Spanish, helping clients with writing and updating resumes, and conducting mock-interview sessions. Interns gain skills in program facilitation and management, public speaking skills in Spanish, and the needs of the Latino community. Successful candidates will have: • A positive attitude • Good organizational skills • Attention to detail • Bilingual English/Spanish skills • Ability to work independently on projects • Ability to work 16-20 hours per week Preferred qualities include: • Experience working in a multicultural setting • Flexible schedule • Interest in and respect for the Latino community Back to top Family Services Internship Family Services Internship Family Services is the social services component of the Latin American Association. This internship provides an opportunity to gain an understanding of the needs affecting metro Atlanta’s Latino population. Interns will become more competent in bilingual social services field, help plan and implement community events and assist with outreach activities. This internship is offered both at the Atlanta office and at the Norcross outreach center. Responsibilities may include: • Helping clients with brief orientations about Family Service Program through telephone calls, verbally and personally • Helping recruit participants for all programs, including Parenting Classes, Anger Management classes, English as a Second Language classes and computer classes in Spanish • Data entry of daily surveys • Assisting with the elderly program (Fridays from 10 AM to 12 PM) • Conducting or supporting outreach events in the local community· • Coordinating food and clothing campaigns for food pantry and clothing room • Assisting Family Support Specialists with the coordination of community service programs • Developing workshops about areas of interest or need Successful candidates will: • Be bilingual in English and Spanish • Ability to relate effectively with people of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds • Have good interpersonal skills Preferred qualities include: • Experience with a similar social service program • Experience working with the Latino community • Comfort in working in a multicultural environment Back to top Language Services Internships English Language Learning Internship English Language Learning interns are needed to assist teachers and program staff to ensure that all ELL classes run smoothly, are well-organized, and are getting promoted. Duties include providing administrative support to the department’s classes, programs and special events; assisting with marketing and communications; registering ELL/Computer students for each session; assist with curriculum development; gather feedback of students and teachers to improve program; and assisting with the set-up, coordination and break down of all special events. The Latino Youth Leadership Conference has become the catalyst for Latino youth in Georgia to pursue their educational goals and improve their chances of success. 6-Internship Positions Available (September-November): • Student Recruitment Coordinator • Volunteer Coordinator • Access to Career and College Networking • LYLC Logistics and Content • Marketing and Publication of Youth Department • Data Entry Dutiesand responsibilities: • Organize and coordinate the Access and College Networking component of conference • Work with LAA staff, faculty, and college students in planning conference workshops • Assist with logistics of the conference • Promote the Youth Conference to middle and high schools • Assist with assessment and evaluation Qualifications: • Successful candidates will have a positive attitude, good organizational skills, attention to detail, and have the ability to work independently on projects • Current student in good academic standing; interest in working with Latino community • Reliable, responsible, and self-directed • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Valid photo ID • Must be able to find reliable transportation • Must be dependable Student Interns will have gain a deeper understanding and strengthen their knowledge on challenges and issues the Latino community encounter. Back to top Tutor-Mentor Internship for LAA Summer Academic Program The Youth Department of the Latin American Association will be holding its annual Summer Academic Program in June. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of Latino youth and help them take steps towards overcoming the educational achievement gap. The academics are focused on the reading, writing, and math subjects and supplemented with cultural enrichment activities. Program Objectives:The main purpose of the Summer Academic Program is to empower students to believe in their immense potential. In order to achieve this we need interns to be tutor-mentors to create valuable experiences for the participants. Each intern will be paired with a Teacher, and collaboratively they will teach a classroom of Latino youth for the course of 6 weeks. Responsibilities: • Assist with the development of curriculum • Build and maintain positive relationships with staff, teachers, and participants • Maintain portfolios and assessments for students in your class • Chaperone field trips • Help manage and teach class • Lead small group discussions about personal development • Assist and mentor participants with final group projects • Aid staff with morning set-up and afternoon clean-up • Share check-in and check-out responsibilities • Support Site Coordinator and other staff as needed Requirements: • Must be currently enrolled in college and have completed at least two years of credited course work • Must have permission to work in the United States • Experience working in a bilingual, bicultural environment (advance conversational-level skills in Spanish a plus) • Must have current CPR/First Aid certification or receive training before start date Time Commitment:Mid May – Mid July, 40 hours/week during program Locations: • Norcross, Georgia (3 positions available) • Atlanta, Georgia (4 positions available) Application Process:Interested and qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, resume along with three (3) professional references. Back to top After-School Academic and Leadership Development Program Internship Sequoyah Middle School - DeKalb, Georgia Position Description: Actively participate in creating and providing hands on strategies and experiences that empower highly motivated Latino students to: • Increase their academic, leadership, physical, and cultural knowledge and skills • Demonstrate through activities their acquired knowledge and skills in school, home, and community Schedule. The afterschool program operates on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-5:30pm beginning November and ending March. Tutor/Mentor will: • Work with students in an afterschool setting, individually and in small groups, to provide academic assistance in mathematics, science, reading, and writing • Facilitate literature circles/reading groups • Work with students in academic, leadership, or community service learning projects • Maintain accurate records of daily contacts and activities with students • Work collaboratively under supervision of Director of Youth Department • Assist Youth Department staff in preparation for LAA activities and workshops • Work with students on college admission and scholarship applications Qualifications: • Current student in good academic standing and completed one year of credited course work • Documented experience working successfully with target age group, specifically with Latino population • Must successfully pass a background check • Ability to help students in math (up to algebra), science, reading, and writing • Reliable, responsible, and self-directed • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Interest in working with Latino middle school students • Willing to learn methods of effective tutoring • Valid photo ID • Must have reliable transporation • Must be dependable and flexible • Must be able to attend mandatory prirot to working in the schools, as well as on-the-job training Back to top
