Marisa Rivera-Albert to Keynote and CNN’s Rick Sanchez to Emcee at LAA’s Compañeros Awards Luncheon April 2
Atlanta (April 17, 2008) – Marisa Rivera-Albert, former president of National Hispana Leadership Institute and CNN Anchor Rick Sanchez will participate in the Latin American Association’s (LAA) Compañeros Awards Luncheon as keynote speaker and emcee, respectively. The event will be held at the Georgia Aquarium April 24 at 12:00 p.m.
As former president of the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI), Marisa Rivera-Albert is a strong advocate of Latino issues, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and women’s leadership and empowerment. Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, she has over 30 years of combined educational, leadership development, consulting, international, and community development experience.
Guided by a desire to empower Latinos, Rivera-Albert dedicates a great deal of time to community service and during her career has managed university programs such as the Hispanic Program for Educational Advancement and the Learning To Lead Program for Hispanic students. Her work experience also includes several assignments overseas for the U.S. Information Agency and the U.S. Embassy in Panama. An entrepreneur herself, Rivera-Albert is the current president of Mpowerment Works, a consulting firm dedicated to helping women succeed.
“Atlanta is in for quite a treat! I’ve spoken with Marisa many times over the past several months and each conversation is nothing less than thought-provoking. We feel not only does she lead by example, but can truly compel individuals to take action and lead in a time of challenge for the Latino community,” says Maritza Pichon, executive director of the LAA. She adds, “As we come together in honor of those who espouse leadership in their daily work or through their community service, our intent is to inspire, challenge, and demonstrate the value of leadership, especially in the most difficult of times.”
The LAA also welcomes Rick Sanchez as emcee for the event. Sanchez is a dynamic anchor and contributor for CNN and CNN en Español. Throughout his career, he has reported on major events across the United States and around the world including the war in Iraq, comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Katrina, on-the-scene coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and war zones in Nicaragua. Additionally, Sanchez has reported live from Havana, Cuba and interviewed prominent newsmakers including Laura Bush, Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev and Manuel Noriega behind bars.
Sanchez's professional honors include an Emmy Award, the American Medical Association’s "Distinguished Journalist Award" and the George Foster Peabody Award for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
The Latin American Association's Annual Compañeros Awards Luncheon honors three community and corporate partners who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in public, corporate and community service. This year's award for Outstanding Community Leadership, Service and Commitment will be presented to Jerry González, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO). Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. will be honored with the Exemplary Corporate Leadership award, and John King, Doraville chief of police, will be recognized for his Outstanding Public Service and Leadership.

Como presidente del National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI), Marisa Rivera-Albert ha sido una firme defensora de los asuntos de interés para los latinos, como el liderazgo juvenil, emprendimiento comercial y la capacitación y fortalecimiento de la mujer Latina.
